2013 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-006
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as DDR-006 for the 2013 America the Beautiful Quarter, this variety shows strong spread west on the middle of Jefferson's nose — a particularly unusual location for doubled die doubling to manifest on a coin design, affecting a sculptural portrait element on what is identified as the Mount Rushmore National Memorial quarter reverse. The westward displacement on the nose creates a secondary profile contour that gives the carved presidential portrait a slightly broader nasal bridge under magnification. Die markers UVC-2301 and DMR-007 identify the working die across three documented stages. Stage A shows the reverse in Early Die State with a diagnostic diagonal die gouge above the first T of STATES visible from the earliest strikes. Stage B and Stage C represent Mid and Late Die State respectively, both currently unconfirmed. The 2013 Mount Rushmore Quarter was the fourth release of that year in the America the Beautiful program, featuring Gutzon Borglum's iconic carved granite faces on the reverse design by Joseph Menna. Struck in copper-nickel clad composition at 5.67 grams on 24.3mm planchets, the strong spread designation indicates this variety is more visible than many ATB doubled dies, making it accessible to collectors without high-power magnification. Examine Jefferson's nose profile under 5x to 7x magnification for the westward secondary contour.
