2013 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-004

Description

Cataloged as UVC-2106 and DMR-005 in the VarietyVista system, the 2013 DDR-004 is a doubled die reverse on the Philadelphia Mint Mount Rushmore National Park quarter showing medium westward spread on the middle of Jefferson's nose. The Mount Rushmore quarter's reverse features the carved presidential portraits on the granite face, and the reference to Jefferson's nose describes the Thomas Jefferson sculpture within this monument design, not the Jefferson nickel. Three die stages have been documented. Stage A represents early die state, currently unconfirmed. Stage B places the reverse at early to mid die state, identified by a die break on the bust west of the designer's initials. Stage C, late die state, remains unconfirmed. The medium spread on Jefferson's nose is a compelling diagnostic because the carved presidential faces on the reverse are rendered at extremely small scale, meaning even moderate hub displacement creates noticeable distortion. America the Beautiful quarters featured annually changing reverses, and the sculptural complexity of Mount Rushmore makes this an interesting canvas for doubled die examination.
