Description

This variety reflects the depth of doubled die research on the 2013-P Mount Rushmore Quarter. The jump from earlier numbers to WDDR-022 illustrates the ongoing nature of this research, as specialists continue to identify new dies among the enormous population of surviving coins. Modern coin production at the Philadelphia Mint employs advanced equipment, yet the fundamental hubbing process still occasionally produces the subtle misalignments that create doubled die varieties. The Mount Rushmore reverse shows workers carving Jefferson's face on a memorial of four presidential portraits each approximately sixty feet tall, carved into a granite cliff face at an elevation of 5,725 feet in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Joseph Menna's engraving translates this monumental scale to a 24.26 mm diameter coin. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 2013-P 25c SD WDDR-022. Higher WDDR numbers may indicate later discovery, more subtle doubling, or simply the order in which varieties were submitted for cataloging.
