2011P(JG)-100DEO-001T Trail Die Obverse

Description

Found by Cal Goodard on a Position B strike of the 2011-P James Garfield Presidential Dollar, this trail die obverse shares the 2011P(JG)-100DEO-001T catalog designation with a Position A counterpart but belongs to a distinct parent strike type. Trail dies result from partially hubbed dies entering production prematurely, and the same trail die obverse paired with different edge-lettering orientations creates separate collectible varieties. At Stage B mid die state, a small die crack extends from the left brow into the field, while another crack emerges from the wave of hair beneath the M of JAMES into the field. Dimples appear below the letters of JAMES GARFIELD, reflecting the incomplete hubbing that characterizes trail die impressions. The reverse is at mid die state with no additional markers. Position B Presidential dollars have their edge lettering oriented so that the date reads upright when the reverse faces the viewer, the opposite relationship from Position A. Collectors building complete sets of Presidential dollar varieties track both positions separately.

• Stage “B“, obverse is MDS – a small die crack is seen from the left brow into the field. Another small die crack is seen from the wave of hair under the M of JAMES entering into the field. The obverse die does have “Dimples” from the bottom of the letters in the name JAMES GARFIELD.
