Sharing the same catalog number as its Position B counterpart but struck from a differently oriented die pair, this Position A example of the 2009 Philadelphia Mint James K. Polk Presidential Dollar die chip represents a distinct coin where the edge lettering reads normally when the obverse faces up and the coin is rotated on its horizontal axis. Presidential Dollars carry incused edge lettering — date, mintmark, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and IN GOD WE TRUST — and the orientation of this lettering relative to the obverse creates the Position A and Position B distinction that collectors track. A die chip occurs when a small piece of the die surface fractures away, and the resulting cavity fills with metal during striking to produce a raised mark on the coin. The Polk dollar honors the eleventh president, who oversaw one of the largest territorial expansions in American history during his single term from 1845 to 1849.
