Description

DC-100c-2009P-01 is a die chip on a 2009 Philadelphia Mint Presidential Dollar, cataloged by Cuds on Coins and filed here under James K. Polk. On 2009 coins the incused edge lettering gives the date, mint mark and E PLURIBUS UNUM (IN GOD WE TRUST moved to the obverse that year). Position A and Position B name which way up the edge lettering runs (on Position A it reads upside down when the portrait faces up); the Mint added the lettering after striking, in random orientation, so the same die variety occurs with either. A die chip occurs when a small piece of the die surface fractures away, and the resulting cavity fills with metal during striking to produce a raised mark on the coin. The Polk dollar honors the eleventh president, who oversaw one of the largest territorial expansions in American history during his single term from 1845 to 1849.
