Struck on the 2009-P District of Columbia Quarter featuring the Duke Ellington design — one of six DC and Territories quarters issued that year — this WDDR-012 variety is cataloged by the Wexler Team and cross-referenced to CONECA 2-R-VIII. The doubling appears on the lower left side of the E in ELLINGTON on the reverse inscription, providing a specific and attributable focal point. Additional die gouges are documented across the reverse field, with a notable gouge on the piano lid near the A of COLUMBIA. The 2009 DC and Territories Quarters were struck in clad composition. The Ellington reverse, designed to honor the jazz legend and Washington DC native, features the piano and musical staff motif, making the doubling on his surname particularly fitting as an attribution point.
