Description

Doubling visible on the water line to the right of the turret characterizes WDDR-006 on the 2009-P DC and US Territories Quarter featuring the Puerto Rico design with its sentry box (garita) at El Morro fortress in San Juan. The turret and water line provide a compact diagnostic area where even subtle hub displacement becomes detectable, and the lateral water line is particularly sensitive to revealing vertical or diagonal spread components. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge below the U in TRUST, a small die gouge just below the bust and WSW of the designer's initials, and a short die crack near the front point of the base of the bust — three obverse markers providing redundant attribution confirmation. The reverse shows no significant additional markers. The DC and US Territories quarter program issued six designs in 2009, covering the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, US Virgin Islands, and Northern Mariana Islands, extending the popular state quarters concept to non-state jurisdictions. Cataloged by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID: 2009-P 25¢ SF PR WDDR-006, the SF PR suffix identifies the San Felipe del Morro Puerto Rico design.
