2008 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-010

Description

Denver-minted with Position B edge lettering, this WDDR-010 on the 2008 John Quincy Adams Presidential Dollar shows doubling at the intersection of the 2nd ray clockwise from the Statue of Liberty's head and her right arm. Position B indicates the edge inscription reads normally when the coin is rotated with the obverse facing away from the viewer — one of two possible orientations for the edge-incused lettering unique to Presidential Dollars. A small die gouge between the upper 8 and 2 in 1829 marks the obverse, while a small die gouge appearing as a dot west of the lower part of the dollar sign provides the reverse diagnostic. Denver's production of the John Quincy Adams dollar contributed to the high-volume output typical of the Presidential Dollar program's early years. The ray-and-arm intersection doubling sits in a geometrically distinct zone where two design elements converge, making the displaced image easier to isolate than spread on smoother surfaces.
