2008 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-007

Description

Sharing the Wexler designation 2008-D $1 JQA WDDR-007 with the Position A counterpart, this Denver-mint John Quincy Adams Presidential dollar carries Position B edge lettering — meaning the edge inscription reads upside-down when the obverse faces up. The same doubled die reverse characteristics apply: doubling at the intersection of the second ray clockwise from Liberty's head and her right arm, with a die gouge to the left of the bottom of "two" in 1829 on the obverse and a die gouge above the D in DE on the reverse. Position A and Position B coins were struck from the same die pair but received their edge lettering in different orientations during the separate edge-striking process, which applied the date, mint mark, and motto to the coin's edge after the obverse and reverse were struck. Because edge lettering orientation is independent of the die variety, both Position A and Position B examples exist for any given WDDR designation, effectively doubling the number of collectible variants for Presidential dollar die varieties.
