Description
Struck at the Denver Mint as indicated by the D mintmark, this doubled die obverse on the 2008 Hawaii State Quarter is cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 2008-D 25¢ HI WDDO-001. Hawaii was the 50th and final state admitted to the Union in 1959, and its quarter design features King Kamehameha I, the warrior-diplomat who unified the Hawaiian Islands, alongside the state outline. The Denver mintmark distinguishes it from Philadelphia-struck counterparts in the Wexler catalog, as each mint facility uses independently manufactured working dies that may develop their own doubling characteristics. Hawaii's quarter was the last of five 2008 releases and the final design in the original fifty-state program, giving it particular significance as a series-closing issue. The combination of Denver production, final-state status, and the culturally distinctive Kamehameha reverse makes documented die varieties on this quarter of interest to multiple collecting specialties.
