The EDS designation for Stage A indicates the die surfaces retain sharp, unworn detail without the progressive die cracks or flow lines that develop through extended use. Clad proof production at San Francisco employed polished dies and specially prepared planchets, so doubling diagnostics must be distinguished from the proof finish's inherently sharp strike. Collectors examining this variety should direct fiber-optic illumination at the mane area just below the saddle horn, looking for a clearly displaced secondary impression of the individual hair strands at approximately 10-20x magnification.
