2007-S Doubled Die Reverse DDR-004
Error
Description
Fourth in the reverse doubled die census for the 2007-S Wyoming State Quarter clad proof, DDR-004 presents medium spread on the first tuft of mane directly beneath the saddle horn on the bucking horse motif. The Wyoming quarter reverse — designed by Norman E. Nemeth and struck at San Francisco — depicts a cowboy astride a rearing bronco above the inscription "The Equality State," providing finely detailed equine mane strands that readily betray hub doubling. VarietyVista assigned die identifiers UVC-1853 and DMR-006, placing this variety within a well-documented family of 2007-S Wyoming DDRs that share the same diagnostic region but originate from independent die pairs. Three die stages are recorded: Stage A where both obverse and reverse surfaces exhibit early die state characteristics, Stage B at mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The EDS designation for Stage A indicates the die surfaces retain sharp, unworn detail without the progressive die cracks or flow lines that develop through extended use. Clad proof production at San Francisco employed polished dies and specially prepared planchets, so doubling diagnostics must be distinguished from the proof finish's inherently sharp strike. Collectors examining this variety should direct fiber-optic illumination at the mane area just below the saddle horn, looking for a clearly displaced secondary impression of the individual hair strands at approximately 10-20x magnification. The medium spread classification indicates the doubling is visible without extreme magnification but does not produce the dramatic separation seen on strong spread varieties.
