2007 (P) Utah State Quarter - Atypical Die Clash ADC-25C-2007-01UT
Error
Description
ADC-25c-2007-01UT is an atypical die clash on a 2007-P Utah State quarter, cataloged by Mad Die Clashes. The clash is moderately strong and unabraded. On the obverse, part of the smokestack on the right-hand locomotive left a mark left of GOD's G, the hills left a mark through Washington's neck, across the queue and into the bow, and the railroad spike left one just below his ear. The marks are doubled; MDC cannot yet say whether the dies clashed twice or a single clash produced the doubling, much like machine doubling. On the reverse, Washington's queue left marks under THE and in the lower left, and the curl at the end of the railroad spike is also from the queue; his lower jaw and upper neck left another mark. MDC's overlay shows the clash rotated even though the dies were not rotated at the strike: the inverted, mirrored LIBERTY sits on a different horizontal line from CROSSROADS. MDC calls this rotation a mystery of die clashes and notes it occurs on other denominations too. The coin appears courtesy of David Strzalkowski.
