2007-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003
ErrorDescription
The 2007-D Lincoln Memorial Cent WDDR-003 is a doubled die reverse variety produced by hub misalignment during die-hubbing at the Denver Mint. When a working die receives successive hub impressions with a slight offset, doubled design elements are permanently locked into the die and appear on every coin struck from it. On WDDR-003 the doubling affects the Memorial building area of Frank Gasparro's reverse — fine architectural detail amplifies the visual impact of even modest hub shifts. The obverse die markers include a small die gouge (dot) below and to the left of the I in LIBERTY, and two small die gouges (dots) north of the E in LIBERTY. On the reverse, a north-south die crack combined with a small die chip runs along the left side of the upper first column of the Memorial — the most immediately useful attribution marker for mid-grade circulated examples where primary doubling may be softened by wear. The 2007-D Lincoln Memorial Cent was struck in the penultimate year of Gasparro's fifty-year reverse before it was retired for the Lincoln Bicentennial issues of 2009. The Memorial column crack and the LIBERTY field dots form a reliable identification set for this variety.
