Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-3013 and DMR-003, this 2007 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent carries the first documented doubled die reverse for the date and mint, showing light westward spread manifesting as an extra column number 7 — the column spanning from the hand level down to the knee of the seated Lincoln statue within the Memorial. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A with both reverse and obverse at early die state, Stage B at mid-die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The 2007-D cent was produced during the penultimate year of Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse, which would be replaced by the four Bicentennial reverse designs in 2009 and then the permanent Shield reverse in 2010. Denver struck approximately 3.76 billion cents in 2007, a massive production volume that required extensive die pair consumption. As the first documented DDR for the 2007-D date, this variety represents the initial cataloged hub misalignment producing westward column doubling — a classic Memorial cent doubled die presentation where the thin vertical columns provide ideal geometry for detecting lateral displacement. Light spread on column 7 means the extra column image sits close to the primary column, requiring magnification of at least 5x to clearly separate the two images, but the hand-to-knee span provides a substantial vertical extent over which to observe the doubled feature.
