Description

Documented on the 2006 Philadelphia Mint Colorado State Quarter, this pre-cud captures the developing rim-to-rim die crack on the reverse that would eventually evolve into a full cud if the die had remained in service. A pre-cud represents the precursor stage of a cud — the die rim has fractured with a crack running from rim to rim, but the broken section has not yet separated or shown lateral displacement. When the fragment eventually breaks away, the resulting cavity fills with metal during striking to produce the raised featureless mass characteristic of a full cud. The "(CO)" suffix in the catalog number identifies the specific State Quarter design — Colorado, the thirty-eighth state, featuring a Rocky Mountain landscape. The State Quarter program (1999-2008) introduced five new reverse designs annually with corresponding new reverse dies, and the Denver and Philadelphia Mints each produced quarters for all fifty states. Two separate cross-reference dates — February 14, 2025 and May 28, 2018 — suggest this variety was cataloged at different times or verified against multiple specimens. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins, the PC prefix designates the pre-cud stage in their comprehensive die break classification system. State Quarter pre-cuds are collected alongside full cuds and retained cuds as part of the broader die break specialty within the enormously popular fifty-state program.
