Description
Documented by Cuds on Coins with a listing date of February 13, 2021, the CU-25c-2006P-17R identifies a reverse cud variety cataloged for the 2006-P Colorado State Quarter. Cud errors form when a section of the die fractures at the rim and the broken piece either falls away or shifts position, leaving a featureless raised area on the struck coin where the die fragment no longer imparts design detail. The resulting blob at the coin's edge is solid metal pushed up into the void left by the missing die steel. No cross-references to other cataloging systems have been established for this particular cud. The Colorado State Quarter, featuring a Rocky Mountain landscape designed by Norman Nemeth, was struck at both Philadelphia and Denver in 2006 as part of the 50 State Quarters program. Philadelphia produced 274.8 million Colorado quarters, and the extensive production run created ample opportunity for die failures to occur and be preserved in the mintage stream. Cud size, position along the rim, and the amount of design displaced by the break all influence collector desirability, with larger cuds affecting recognizable design elements commanding the strongest premiums. Collectors seeking to acquire CU-25c-2006P-17R should compare it against the other Colorado P-mint reverse cuds to understand the relative size and position of each documented break.
