Description

Fifteenth documented reverse cud on the 2006 Philadelphia Mint Colorado State Quarter, this die break variety formed when a piece of the die rim broke away completely, leaving a cavity that filled with metal during striking to produce a raised featureless blob at the coin's edge. The high sequence number reflects the intensity of cud documentation on State Quarter production, where the combination of high mintage volumes and fifty different reverse designs created abundant opportunities for die rim failures. The "R" suffix confirms this cud appeared on the reverse die bearing the Colorado design. An obverse die crack is also present, indicated by the original cataloger's notation of accompanying obverse cracking. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins, CU-25c-2006P-15R documents one of many rim fractures observed across the State Quarters 1999-2008 series. The Colorado quarter, depicting a Rocky Mountain scene, was the thirtieth design in the series. Fifteen reverse cuds from a single date and mint underscores the mechanical stresses involved in producing the enormous quantities of quarters required for the program, where Denver and Philadelphia each struck hundreds of millions of each design.
