CU-25c-2006P-14R Cud
Error
Description
Recorded by Cuds on Coins on May 7, 2019, CU-25c-2006P-14R is the fourteenth reverse cud error cataloged for the 2006-P Colorado State Quarter. A cud error develops when a wedge-shaped piece of the hardened die steel fractures along the rim and separates from the die body, leaving a cavity that the softer planchet metal fills during the striking press's several hundred tons of pressure. The resulting raised, featureless lump at the coin's edge is the hallmark of a cud, and each one is unique in shape, size, and position depending on the fracture geometry of the specific die failure. No cross-references to other cataloging systems exist for this variety. The 2006-P Colorado quarter's reverse, depicting Longs Peak in the Rocky Mountains with the inscription "Colorful Colorado," was one of the more topographically detailed State Quarter designs, and rim breaks extending into the mountain landscape create particularly dramatic visual contrasts between the detailed engraved terrain and the smooth, blank cud surface. Philadelphia's 2006 production run of 274.8 million Colorado quarters was substantial enough to generate an unusually high number of documented reverse cuds, and the die steel's interaction with the high-relief mountain design may have accelerated rim fractures compared to flatter State Quarter designs. Collectors assembling a comprehensive set of Colorado quarter cuds should catalog each by rim position and size, as the fourteen reverse examples documented for the P-mint alone offer significant variety in break location and extent. Error dealers occasionally offer multiple Colorado cuds for comparison study.
