Kenneth Russell's attribution of this variety adds to the comprehensive doubled die inventory for the Westward Journey commemorative nickels. The notably low CDDR-009 number combined with the higher CONECA DDR-033 suggests this variety was among the earlier discoveries in the Combined Doubled Die Reverse catalog while being cataloged later in the CONECA sequence. The 2005 Mint Sets that contained these Satin Finish coins have become a primary hunting ground for variety collectors, as each set guaranteed two examples of the Ocean in View reverse—one from Philadelphia and one from Denver—in the distinctive matte finish that characterizes this short-lived Mint Set format produced only from 2005 through 2010.
