Description

Struck with the Satin Finish applied to 2005 Mint Set coins, this "Ocean in View" Jefferson Nickel from the Westward Journey series exhibits Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST, TY of LIBERTY, and the date. A tilted hub produces doubling that radiates from a pivot point, with elements further from the tilt axis showing greater separation than those near it. The Westward Journey series (2004-2005) commemorated the Lewis and Clark expedition with four distinctive reverse designs, and "Ocean in View" depicts the Pacific Ocean as first sighted by the expedition — a one-year design that makes any die variety on it inherently scarce relative to the standard Monticello reverse used across decades. Die marker: a slanted die scratch above the tallest tree on the reverse landscape. Discovered by Kenneth Russell. Wexler Variety ID: 2005 P WDDO-011 Satin Finish Ocean in View. The Satin Finish texture, produced exclusively for 2005-2010 Mint Set coins, creates a distinctive matte-like surface that differs from both proof mirrors and standard business-strike luster.
