Description

Attributed by Kenneth Russell, WDDO-005 of the 2005 Philadelphia Satin Finish Jefferson Nickel — Ocean in View design — exhibits Class VIII (Tilted Hub) doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST, with slight spread also on LIBERTY and the date. Class VIII doubling occurs when the hub tilts during hubbing, producing diagonal displacement along an angled axis rather than horizontal, vertical, or rotational paths. A diagnostic light die crack across the upper Y of LIBERTY provides secondary attribution confirmation. The 2005 Ocean in View reverse, part of the Westward Journey Nickel Series commemorating Lewis and Clark, carries Joe Fitzgerald's design depicting the Pacific Coast vista — and this obverse variety appears on Satin Finish coins from 2005 Uncirculated Mint Sets, featuring a distinctive matte-like surface from specially burnished planchets. Satin Finish coins present die varieties differently than proof or business strikes, as the textured surface can either soften or accentuate doubling depending on its interaction with the tilted hub displacement. Collectors should focus on IN GOD WE TRUST, where Class VIII spread is most pronounced.
