2005 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-032

Description

Brian Ribar documented this variety on the 2005-P Westward Journey "Ocean in View" Satin Finish Jefferson Nickel, cataloged as Wexler 2005-P WDDR-032 Satin Finish Ocean in View, with the cross-reference notation "Unknown" indicating that no CONECA or other secondary attribution has been established. The satin finish surface presents distinct challenges for doubled die examination: unlike proof surfaces that provide mirror-like contrast for resolving secondary impressions, and unlike business strikes whose flow lines follow predictable patterns, the burnished satin texture creates a uniformly matte surface where fine doubling can be masked by the intentional surface granularity. Die markers on the obverse include a die gouge manifesting as a dot in the field east of the tip of Jefferson's nose (east being rightward on the coin as oriented with the portrait facing right) and a small die dot to the right of the top of the B in LIBERTY — both providing field-area landmarks that are relatively easy to locate against the featureless background surrounding the portrait. The reverse carries two markers: a die gouge dot below the wave to the west of the last A of AMERICA, and a small die gouge at the top of the I of UNITED. The reverse markers' positioning near inscription elements makes them convenient for simultaneous verification with the doubling itself, which would appear on the "Ocean in View" reverse designed by Joe Fitzgerald depicting the Pacific coastline vista encountered by the Lewis and Clark expedition. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 75% copper / 25% nickel at 5 grams, the 2005 satin finish nickels were produced exclusively for uncirculated mint sets and are not found in circulation, making them accessible primarily through set breakdowns and the secondary market.
