2005 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-031
Error
Description
Brian Ribar discovered this satin finish 2005-P Jefferson nickel WDDR-031, cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2005 P WDDR-031 Satin Finish Ocean in View, with a CONECA cross-reference as DDR-008. The CONECA listing provides independent confirmation of this variety's legitimacy through the Combined Organizations of Numismatic Error Collectors of America's separate attribution process. Obverse die markers include a curved die gouge on Jefferson's lower lip and an additional die gouge below the lip. The reverse carries a die gouge appearing as a dot below the tip of the lowest right branch on the target tree, along with a short vertical die scratch at the top of the dot above the I in IN. These markers provide a reliable multi-point identification framework spanning both sides of the coin. The "Ocean in View" reverse by Joe Fitzgerald captures the dramatic moment when the Lewis and Clark expedition first sighted the Pacific Ocean, and the design's combination of coastline, trees, and ocean horizon creates diverse terrain where hub doubling can manifest in various ways. The satin finish designation confirms this variety originated in coins produced for the 2005 uncirculated mint sets, where a specialized burnishing process created the distinctive matte surface texture used from 2005 through 2010. Satin finish coins were not available through standard circulation channels, meaning WDDR-031 examples can only originate from opened mint sets or rolls made from mint set coins. The dual attribution through both Wexler and CONECA systems gives this variety particularly strong documentation credentials, and the specific die markers make field identification straightforward for variety specialists equipped with appropriate magnification.
