2005 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-021
Error
Description
Attributed by Brian Ribar on a satin finish "Ocean in View" Jefferson Nickel — part of the 2005 Westward Journey series — this doubled die reverse carries the specialized designation Wexler Variety ID 2005-P WDDR-021 Satin Finish Ocean in View. The satin finish format was produced exclusively for annual uncirculated mint sets from 2005 through 2010, with planchets receiving a distinctive burnishing treatment before striking. Obverse die markers include two slanted die scratches through the G of GOD, an almost horizontal die scratch in the center of the O of GOD, and a die dot above the D of GOD. The reverse shows a die dot above the second U of PLURIBUS. The 2005 Westward Journey nickels represent one of the most significant design changes in Jefferson Nickel history — the "Ocean in View" reverse, designed by Joe Fitzgerald, depicts the Pacific Ocean vista that Lewis and Clark encountered in November 1805, commemorating the bicentennial of their expedition. This was one of two special reverse designs for 2005 (the other being the "American Bison"). Doubled die varieties on satin finish coins are particularly notable because the limited distribution channel — only through mint sets — means the total population of any given die variety is constrained by the number of sets produced, potentially making these varieties scarcer in absolute terms than their business strike counterparts.
