2005 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-020

Description

This Satin Finish 2005 Jefferson Nickel from the "Ocean in View" design of the Westward Journey series displays Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, and the date. Tilted hub doubling occurs when the working hub contacts the die at a slight angle during manufacture, creating displacement that increases with distance from the tilt axis — elements farther from the pivot show more separation while those near it show minimal effect. Die marker: a die dot to the left of Jefferson's eye on the obverse, providing a fixed diagnostic point for attribution. No significant reverse markers noted. Discovered by Kenneth Russell. The "Ocean in View" reverse, one of four Westward Journey designs for 2005, depicts the Pacific coastline as witnessed by the Lewis and Clark expedition — its single-year production makes doubled die varieties on this design inherently scarcer than those on the standard Monticello reverse. Satin Finish coins were produced exclusively for 2005-2010 Uncirculated Mint Sets, featuring a distinctive matte-like texture applied through a specialized burnishing process that differentiates them from both proof and standard business strikes.
