Description

A dual-variety satin finish Jefferson Nickel discovered by Brian A. Ribar, this 2005-P Ocean in View issue is attributed as Wexler Variety ID: 2005 P WDDO-016 Satin Finish Ocean in View and cross-referenced as CONECA OIV Reverse 9-R-VIII. Very close Class VIII tilted hub doubling shows on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, and the date. The reverse die is separately listed as WDDR-022, making this a dual-variety coin with hubbing anomalies on both sides. The "Ocean in View" design — one of the 2005 Westward Journey Nickel Series reverses — depicts the Pacific Ocean as seen by Lewis and Clark, commemorating their expedition's arrival at the coast. Satin finish specimens were produced for United States Mint uncirculated sets from 2005 through 2010, featuring a distinctive matte-like surface. Class VIII tilted hub doubling results from the hub contacting the die at a slight angle, producing displacement following a gradient across the design. The CONECA cross-reference provides dual-catalog verification within their independent classification system.
