Description

Attributed by Kenneth Russell on the 2005-P Satin Finish Jefferson Nickel (Ocean in View design), WDDO-015 is classified as Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling. A very close spread is visible on GOD, TRUST, and the date, where a slight angular misalignment between hub impressions produced subtle extra thickness on these elements. The reverse carries a die scratch to the right of the lower portion of the tallest tree — a useful diagnostic for confirming the die pairing. Satin Finish nickels were produced exclusively for 2005-2010 Uncirculated Mint Sets and feature a distinctive matte-like surface texture achieved through a special die preparation process. The 2005 Westward Journey series introduced two new reverse designs — this variety appears on the Ocean in View type depicting Lewis and Clark's first glimpse of the Pacific. Tilted Hub Doubling occurs when the hub enters the die at a slight angle during one of the multiple impressions required to fully sink the design, leaving offset traces concentrated on one side of the die.
