2005 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-054

Description

One of the most celebrated State Quarter varieties ever discovered, the 2005 Minnesota DDR-054 — widely known as the "Extra Tree" — exhibits strong doubled die spread creating a clearly visible additional tree to the right of the third tree on the reverse, a doubling so dramatic it drew widespread media attention and introduced thousands of new collectors to variety hunting. Cataloged by VarietyVista with UVC-1509 and DMR-057, this Early Die State variety appears on SMS (Satin Mint Set) finish coins, meaning examples can be found in 2005 official Mint Sets with the distinctive satin finish produced from 2005 to 2010. Charles Vickers' Minnesota reverse depicts loons on a lake framed by evergreen trees, and the doubled die created an unmistakable phantom tree visible to the naked eye on strong examples. The "Extra Tree" gained celebrity status, appearing in news stories and variety guides as a flagship example of how hub doubling can transform a coin from face value to significant premium. Struck on copper-nickel clad at 24.3mm with SMS finish. Look right of the third tree for the famous extra tree — the bold doubled image that made this variety a household name.
