2005 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-047
Error
Description
Holding the DDR-047 position in an exceptionally deep reverse doubled die census, this 2005 State Quarter variety exhibits strong spread visible as an extra tree to the left of the third tree on the reverse design. The 2005 State Quarter program included five different reverse designs, and this DDR falls within the series' broader production context where high-speed Philadelphia and Denver coining operations generated numerous hub doubling events across the program's ten-year run. VarietyVista documented this die under UVC-1502 and DMR-050, with three die stages tracked: Stage A where both reverse and obverse surfaces exhibit early die state characteristics, Stage B at mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The EDS confirmation for Stage A means specimens exist with sharp, unworn die surfaces preserving the doubling at maximum clarity. A critical comment accompanies this variety: "SMS. Can be found in Mint Sets." The SMS (Satin Finish) designation indicates this variety appears on satin-finish coins produced for 2005 uncirculated mint sets — a special finish applied to coins from 2005 through 2010 that used burnished blanks and specially prepared dies to create a distinctive matte-like texture. Satin finish production employed different handling procedures than standard business strikes, and the strong spread classification producing a clearly visible phantom tree speaks to a substantial hub misalignment during die preparation. The doubling manifests as a complete secondary tree image displaced to the left of the third tree in the reverse design, making this one of the more visually dramatic DDRs in the extensive 2005 State Quarter doubled die catalog. Collectors should examine the tree grouping under 8-12x magnification, where the extra tree appears as a distinct secondary impression rather than merely thickened trunk or branch lines.
