Description

The 2005 Minnesota DDR-054 — widely known as the "Extra Tree" — exhibits strong doubled die spread creating a clearly visible additional tree to the right of the third tree on the reverse, a doubling which drew widespread media attention and introduced thousands of new collectors to variety hunting. Cataloged by VarietyVista with UVC-1509 and DMR-057, this Early Die State variety appears on SMS (Satin Mint Set) finish coins, meaning examples can be found in 2005 official Mint Sets with the distinctive satin finish produced from 2005 to 2010. Charles Vickers' Minnesota reverse depicts a loon on a lake framed by evergreen trees, and the doubled die created an unmistakable phantom tree visible to the naked eye on strong examples. Struck on copper-nickel clad at 24.26 mm with SMS finish. Look right of the third tree for the extra tree.
