2005 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-014
Error
Description
Light eastward spread creates an extra column number 6, spanning from knee to shin height, on this 2005 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial Cent Satin Finish variety — another entry in the long tradition of Memorial Cent reversed doubled dies producing "ghost columns" from hub displacement. Cataloged by VarietyVista as DDR-014 with die classification UVC-2911 and die marriage DMR-016, both obverse and reverse appear in early die state with later states unconfirmed. This variety appears on Satin Finish coins produced exclusively for inclusion in U.S. Mint uncirculated sets from 2005 through 2010, receiving a distinctive matte surface treatment that differs from both the standard business strike luster and the mirror finish of proofs. The Satin Finish surface can sometimes make subtle doubling easier to detect because the even, non-reflective surface provides consistent lighting across the coin's face. Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse was in its forty-seventh year on the 2005 cent, with just four years remaining before the 2009 Bicentennial reverses replaced it. Struck on copper-plated zinc at 19mm with Brenner's Lincoln portrait. The eastward displacement on column 6 at knee-to-shin height produces the characteristic extra column — examine this area on the Memorial's columned facade for the doubled architectural detail.
