2005 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-011
Error
Description
A Satin Finish variety found in official 2005 U.S. Mint Sets, the Lincoln Memorial Cent DDR-011 displays a strong spread with light hubbing directed west, manifesting as an extra column number 7 — the vertical element connecting the hand area to the pedestal on Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse. The extra column effect creates a shadow element alongside one of the Memorial's architectural features, a doubling presentation unique to designs with geometric structure. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-2908 with die marriage reference DMR-013, three die states have been documented: Stage A confirms both reverse and obverse in early die state, while Stages B and C at mid and late die state remain unconfirmed. The "strong spread but light hubbing" description indicates a significant displacement between the two hub impressions despite relatively shallow secondary impression depth — producing clearly separated but faint secondary design elements. The 2005 Satin Finish cents, produced exclusively for Mint Sets with a distinctive matte surface texture, offer superior conditions for examining doubled die characteristics compared to standard circulation strikes. The Satin Finish process — introduced in 2005 and used through 2010 — creates a uniform matte surface that eliminates luster-related visual noise, making hub doubling details more readily apparent.
