Description

Third in the Wexler doubled die reverse catalog for the 2005 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial Cent, WDDR-003 records a hub misalignment during die preparation that left visible doubling on Frank Gasparro's iconic Memorial reverse. The 2005 production year was the penultimate full year of Memorial reverse coinage before four bicentennial designs replaced it in 2009, making late-era varieties like this one part of the closing chapter in a design run that began in 1959. The Memorial's architectural elements — twelve columns, horizontal entablature, and the tiny seated Lincoln figure within — provided sensitive surfaces where even modest hub displacement could produce detectable secondary impressions under magnification. As part of a DDR census that eventually exceeded one hundred entries for 2005 Philadelphia cents alone, WDDR-003 reflects the extraordinary depth of variety research conducted on this date. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2005 1c WDDR-003.
