2005 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-043

Description

Appearing on the Bison reverse design of the 2005 Westward Journey Jefferson Nickel, DDR-043 shows strong spread north of the tip of the lowest branch of the right tree, part of the distinctive reverse landscape commemorating the Lewis and Clark expedition. Attributed by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-1629 and DMR-046, three progressive stages are documented: Stage A shows a small vertical die gouge above the L of LEWIS in early die state with the obverse also in early die state, Stage B in mid-die state remains unconfirmed, and Stage C in late die state likewise awaits confirmation. The vertical die gouge above L of LEWIS provides a useful confirming diagnostic for attribution. The 2005 Jefferson Nickel featured two special reverse designs as part of the Westward Journey series: the Bison reverse and the Ocean in View reverse, both commemorating the Lewis and Clark expedition's bicentennial. This variety can be found in Mint Sets from 2005. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel at the Philadelphia Mint, this Westward Journey Bison Nickel documents strong reverse doubling on the tree detail with a die gouge near the LEWIS inscription as a confirming marker.
