Description

Part of the Westward Journey nickel program honoring Lewis and Clark, this 2005-P Bison reverse WDDR-004 carries cross-references as CDDR-004, Potter DDR#6, and CONECA DDR-006. The obverse die is itself a doubled die listed as 2005-P OIV 5-cent WDDO-012, creating a DDO/DDR combination. Reverse die markers include a slanted die gouge above the left tip of the “y” of “joy.” Struck at Philadelphia in 75% copper and 25% nickel, weighing 5.0 grams at 21.21 mm diameter, this nickel features Norman E. Nemeth's Bison reverse. The Westward Journey series produced numerous doubled die varieties as the Mint introduced entirely new hub designs for the first time since 1938, and the fresh tooling generated distinctive hubbing anomalies.

Die Markers

  • Obverse: The obverse is a doubled die listed as 2005 P OIV 5c WDDO-012.
  • Reverse: Slanted die gouge above the left tip of the "y" of "joy."
