2005 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-031

Description

Available in Satin Mint Set (SMS) format — the special finish used in 2005-2010 Mint Sets — this 2005-P Bison Jefferson Nickel DDR-031 shows strong spread between the first and second branches of the right tree flanking the American bison on the Westward Journey reverse. This variety boasts rich die stage documentation. Stage A at early die state is identified by a die gouge under the 8 of 1805 on the reverse, with the obverse also in early die state. Stage B at early-to-mid die state shows a heavy die crack developing across RTY of LIBERTY on the obverse, demonstrating progressive deterioration. Stage C at late die state remains unconfirmed.
