2005 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-025
Error
Description
Among the most visually striking Westward Journey nickel varieties, the 2005 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-025 displays strong extra thickness on all interior design elements and medium extra thickness on the peripheral inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Cataloged by VarietyVista, this variety appears on the Ocean in View reverse by Joe Fitzgerald, depicting the Pacific coastline that Lewis and Clark reached in November 1805. The Jefferson Nickel is struck in cupronickel (75% copper, 25% nickel) at 5.00 grams and 21.2 mm diameter. VarietyVista assigns die markers UVC-1583 and DMR-028 with four documented die stages: Stage A at Early Die State showing a light die gouge off the upper right leg of the last U of UNUM and an obverse also at EDS, Stage B at EDS with a die gouge dot in the field under the T of UNITED plus a light die gouge in the upper portion of the Y of LIBERTY, Stage C at Mid Die State (unconfirmed), and Stage D at Late Die State (unconfirmed). VarietyVista commentary notes this variety with the designation SMS and indicates it can be found in Mint Sets, referring to the Satin Finish coins distributed in 2005 uncirculated sets that feature a distinctive matte surface texture differing from standard business strikes. The strong extra thickness across interior elements combined with the satin finish mint set source makes this a particularly attractive variety for Jefferson Nickel collectors seeking high-grade, well-preserved examples.
