Description

Featuring Jamie Franki's American Bison reverse from the 2005 Westward Journey Nickel Series, DDR-024 records a very strong spread visible as a portion of the lowest left branch of the right tree in the field above the bison. Die markers are cataloged as UVC-1582 and DMR-027. Three die stages are documented: Stage A with the reverse and obverse in EDS, Stage B in MDS (unconfirmed), and Stage C in LDS (unconfirmed). This variety can be found in Satin Finish examples from Westward Journey uncirculated sets—the 2005 satin finish coins were distributed in special U.S. Mint sets with a distinctive matte surface treatment that differs from both proof and standard business strikes. Philadelphia Mint production. The Westward Journey program replaced Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse with two special designs in both 2004 and 2005, and the Bison reverse generated significant collector interest that led to intensive die variety research. Very strong spread on tree branch detail provides a visually dramatic diagnostic. Attributed by VarietyVista.
