VarietyVista cataloged this Jefferson Nickel Westward Journey series doubled die reverse under UVC-1579 and DMR-024, documenting a very strong spread visible as a portion of the second and third lowest left branches of the right tree appearing duplicated in the field below. The Westward Journey series (2004-2005) featured special reverse designs celebrating the Lewis and Clark expedition, and this DDR-021 appears on the 2005 reverse. Notably, this variety is identified as an SMS (Special Mint Set) issue that can be found in Westward Journey Sets, distinguishing it from regular business strikes. Die stage documentation records Stage A with the reverse in early die state and a small die gouge dot on the forehead near the rim, Stage B at mid-die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed).
