2005 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-017
Error
Description
Attributed by VarietyVista as DDR-017, this 2005 Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverse from the Westward Journey series shows a strong but light spread as a portion of the lowest left branch of the right tree in the field above between the branches on the American Bison reverse. Die markers UVC-1575 and DMR-020 define the variety, with Stage A exhibiting a small die gouge dot at the left base of the right tree while the reverse is in EDS and the obverse is also in EDS. Stages B (MDS) and C (LDS) remain unconfirmed. Notably, this variety can be found in Mint Sets bearing the SMS (Special Mint Set) finish, giving collectors an opportunity to find the doubled die on coins with enhanced surface quality. The 2005 Westward Journey nickels featured two unique reverse designs — the American Bison and Ocean in View — replacing the traditional Monticello reverse for a single year. The bison design by Jamie Franki depicted the animal in profile, and the detailed tree branches flanking the composition provided multiple reference points where hub doubling could manifest. Finding seventeen documented DDRs for this one-year design attests to the intensive examination these popular commemorative-style nickels have received.
