2005 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-016
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as DDR-016 under Universal Variety Code UVC-1574, this doubled die reverse was discovered on a 2005 Jefferson nickel from the Westward Journey series, specifically the Bison reverse designed by Jamie Franki. The primary diagnostic shows a very strong spread visible as a portion of the wave and the lowest left branch of the right tree appearing in the field above, indicating substantial hub displacement on this die. Die marker records tracked under DMR-019 document Stage A in early die state with a die scratch above the S of LEWIS, a die scratch through the upper loop of the S of LEWIS, and a small die gouge dot near the rim west of the DE designer's initials. Stages B (MDS) and C (LDS) are unconfirmed. A significant note in the VarietyVista records indicates this variety carries the SMS designation and can be found in 2005 Mint Sets, referring to the special satin finish coins produced for that year's uncirculated mint sets. The Jefferson Nickels Westward Journey 2004-2005 program featured two unique reverse designs each year commemorating the Lewis and Clark expedition, departing from Felix Schlag's Monticello design. The 2005 nickel was struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.2 mm. The Bison (American Buffalo) reverse design, with its detailed animal rendering and landscape elements including trees and prairie, provided numerous fine design elements where strong hub displacement could produce dramatic doubling effects visible under moderate magnification.
