Description

A very strong spread manifesting as wide hook-like doubling extending off the second-from-lowest branch on the left side of the right tree makes DDR-007 one of the more visually dramatic doubled die reverses cataloged for the 2005 Jefferson Nickel Westward Journey "American Bison" design. The hook-like doubling pattern — where the displaced branch image curves away from the original — is unusual and distinctive, differing from the more typical parallel or radial spread patterns. Die markers under UVC-1567 and DMR-012 record Stage A with the reverse in Early Die State, accompanied by two small die gouge dots WNW of the G of GOD also in EDS; Stage B at Mid-Die State (unconfirmed); and Stage C at Late Die State (unconfirmed). VarietyVista notes this variety can be found in Mint Sets with the SMS (Satin Mint Set) designation, indicating these specimens carry the distinctive satin finish applied to 2005 uncirculated set coins. The "American Bison" reverse by Jamie Franki depicts a single bison in profile, and the variety trees flanking the animal provide detailed branching structures where hub displacement becomes readily apparent.
