Description

Very strong spread on the lower right branch of the left tree and on the first and third lower right branches of the right tree, combined with strong extra thickness on all interior design elements, makes DDR-001 the primary doubled die reverse on the 2005 Jefferson Nickel Westward Journey "American Bison" reverse. Joe Fitzgerald's reverse design depicting an American bison based on a photograph of "Black Diamond," a bison that resided at the Central Park Zoo, provided organic contours where hub doubling manifests with particular clarity in the tree branches framing the bison. Die markers UVC-1561 and DMR-006 track three stages: Stage A with reverse and obverse at Early Die State, Stage B at Mid Die State (unconfirmed), and Stage C at Late Die State (unconfirmed). A critical collecting note: this variety can be found in Mint Sets with the Satin Finish (SMS) treatment, meaning specimens exist with both the standard circulation strike finish and the special matte-like satin surface used exclusively for 2005 Uncirculated Mint Set coins. Cataloged by VarietyVista, DDR-001's "very strong" classification places it among the most visually prominent doubled dies in the two-year Westward Journey program, and its availability in both standard and SMS finishes gives collectors two distinct finish types to pursue for a complete representation of this variety.
