2005-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

First cataloged doubled die obverse for the 2005 Denver Mint Kansas State Quarter, WDDO-001 displays doubling on the underside of Washington's earlobe — the same sensitive location where hub displacement registers on numerous other quarter dates across the Flanagan obverse design. The Kansas quarter, seventh year of the 1999-2008 State Quarter program, featured a reverse depicting a bison and sunflower, while the shared obverse carried John Flanagan's Washington portrait with the D mint mark denoting Denver production. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 2005-D 25c KS WDDO-001. Die Markers: Obverse: A die gouge can be found just to the left of the D mint mark; a die crack runs across the left end of the base of the bust. Reverse: A small die gouge can be found in the reverse design area. The die crack running across the bust base indicates progressive die fatigue, while the die gouge near the D mint mark provides a precise attribution landmark. As the primary doubled die obverse for 2005-D Kansas, this variety anchors the catalog for Denver-minted Kansas quarter die varieties. A die crack runs from north to south above the bison’s nose. A die chip can be found near the midpoint of this die crack.
