2004-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-012
Error
Description
Attributed by the Wexler Team as 2004-D 1¢ WDDR-012, this doubled die reverse variety appears on a 2004-D Lincoln Memorial cent struck at the Denver Mint. The Lincoln Memorial cent was produced in copper-plated zinc composition weighing 2.5 grams with a 19 mm diameter and a plain edge. This variety is well-documented across multiple attribution services, cross-referenced as Crawford CDDR-013 and Coppercoins 2004D-1DR-016, indicating widespread recognition in the variety collecting community. The doubling on WDDR-012 shows on the lower left side of the seventh Memorial column to the right of the statue and the pedestal, with extra knees visible southwest of the normal knees. The "extra knees" diagnostic is particularly notable because it represents doubling on the small statue of Lincoln within the Memorial, a feature that requires the doubling to be strong enough to create recognizable anatomical detail rather than just thickened lines. Obverse die markers include a die gouge in the field well north of the digit 4 in the date, positioned at an unusual distance from the design elements that makes it a distinctive identification marker. The reverse carries two notable markers: a short vertical die gouge to the right of the top of the T in CENT and a short vertical die scratch to the right of the upper M in AMERICA. The multiple cross-references from Crawford and Coppercoins confirm that variety hunters examining 2004-D cents through different cataloging systems have independently documented this die. The seventh column area adjacent to the Lincoln statue remains the single most productive zone for doubled die discovery on Memorial cents, as the complex intersection of architectural columns and the seated figure provides the highest density of fine detail on Frank Gasparro's reverse design.
