Description

Wexler Variety ID 2004-D 1¢ WDDR-006 identifies a doubled die reverse on the Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent with doubling concentrated on two distinct areas of Frank Gasparro's reverse design. The primary doubling shows on the lower right side of the 6th Memorial column to the left of the lower statue, and a secondary expression doubles the statue's knees to the Southeast — creating a faint extra set of knees offset downward and to the right of the primary struck position. The southeast spread direction on the knee doubling indicates the second hub impression displaced in that compass direction relative to the first, a vector that also accounts for the column displacement visible on column 6. Three obverse die markers provide independent attribution support beyond the doubling itself: a die gouge above the right side of the B in LIBERTY establishes the primary obverse checkpoint. On the reverse, two additional die gouges serve as fingerprints — one to the right of the upper last column and another to the right of the upper second A in AMERICA. These die gouges are accidental surface marks introduced during die preparation or handling that transfer as small raised features on struck coins, and their specific positions create a unique combination that distinguishes this working die pair from all others. The 2004-D Lincoln Memorial Cent was struck in copper-plated zinc composition at 2.5 grams. The Memorial reverse's columnar architecture and the seated Lincoln statue's detailed anatomy make these design elements particularly effective at revealing hub doubling, as the parallel vertical lines and the figure's bilateral symmetry provide abundant reference geometry against which even slight displacement becomes visually apparent under 7x magnification.
