Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2004-D 1¢ WDDR-004 and carrying three cross-references — CONECA 6-R-VIII, Coppercoins 2004D-1DR-008, and the Wexler Variety ID — this Lincoln Memorial Cent exhibits doubling on the lower right side of the sixth Memorial column to the left of the lower statue, along with visible doubling on the right side of the statue's right knee. The CONECA Class VIII (Tilted Hub Doubling) designation indicates the hub was angled relative to the die during the secondary impression, producing localized doubling that manifests most prominently in the statue and column area of the Memorial design. Obverse die markers include a die gouge above the B in LIBERTY, while the reverse carries multiple diagnostics: die pitting to the left of the lower T in UNITED, several light horizontal die scratches above the left side of the Memorial roof, and two small die gouges below the right Memorial base. The die pitting — small raised dots on struck coins corresponding to corrosion pits in the die steel — indicates moisture-related deterioration that occurred during the die's service life or storage between production runs at the Denver Mint. The Lincoln Memorial Cent was designed by Frank Gasparro for the reverse and Victor David Brenner for the obverse, struck in copper-plated zinc (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) weighing 2.50 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. The triple cross-referencing across CONECA, Coppercoins, and Wexler systems confirms this as a widely recognized variety in the attribution community, and the three independent cataloging numbers enable collectors to locate information about this variety across all major reference platforms used for Lincoln Cent doubled die research.
