2004-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-004
Error
Description
Presenting an unusual die stage progression, this 2004-D Lincoln Memorial Cent DDR-004 shows light spread on the monument floor and pedestals. Die markers include UVC-2874 and DMR-005. Of particular interest is the three-stage documentation: Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed); Stage B at mid-die state (unconfirmed); and Stage C where the reverse has reached late die state while the obverse remains in early die state. This asymmetric wear pattern — where one die deteriorates significantly faster than its counterpart — indicates either that the reverse die was replaced during the die's service life or that the reverse experienced uneven mechanical stress accelerating its wear. Such mismatched die states provide valuable insights into Mint production practices and die management. The monument floor and pedestal areas of the Memorial reverse sit at the base of the design where metal flow during striking can be inconsistent, making light spread in these zones somewhat challenging to attribute without careful comparison to a known normal specimen.
