Description

Producing a strong eastward spread that creates the illusion of an extra seventh column on the Lincoln Memorial — from the hand area down to the pedestal — DDR-003 on the 2004-D Lincoln Memorial Cent is one of the more visually dramatic doubled die reverses in the late Memorial series. Cataloged as UVC-2533 / DMR-004, the "extra column" effect occurs because the doubling duplicates the rightmost column with enough separation to appear as an additional architectural element. The phenomenon is specific to Frank Gasparro's Memorial reverse, where the fine vertical columns serve as natural indicators of hub displacement. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets, the 2004-D belongs to the penultimate year of the Memorial reverse design, which ended in 2008. Attributed by VarietyVista. The extra column doubled die reverses are among the most collected varieties on Memorial Cents because the doubling is identifiable without high magnification, making them accessible cherrypicking targets for both novice and experienced variety collectors.
