Description

Documented by VarietyVista under UVC-2494 and DMR-003, this doubled die reverse on the 2004 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent exhibits a medium spread on the left monument floor and pedestal area of the Lincoln Memorial. The die progressed through multiple documented stages: Stage A represents early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B shows both the reverse and obverse at mid-die state, and Stage C represents late die state (also unconfirmed). Doubled dies form during the hubbing process when a working die receives two or more impressions from the hub at slightly different positions, and the resulting misalignment creates the doubled image that appears on every coin struck from that die. The left monument floor and pedestal of the Memorial reverse provided a flat, detailed surface where even subtle hub misalignment becomes visible under magnification. Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse, in production from 1959 through 2008, features intricate architectural detail in the memorial building that has proven particularly productive for doubled die variety hunters. The 2004-D cent was struck during the later years of the Memorial design, when Denver's high-volume production consumed many die pairs and increased the statistical likelihood of hubbing errors.
